Orlando Raphael is a musician, composer, audiovisual artist and producer currently based in southwest England. His work uses compositional and production techniques to explore how the listener interacts and engages with the medium in question, as well as how human processes can be mirrored within an audio medium,
Technically, Raphael’s work is focused on combining more traditional compositional elements and recording processes with forward thinking electronic production techniques. This includes use of live and synthesised instrumentation as well as field and sample based recordings, paired with the use of software such as Wwise, Max MSP and Ableton.
Stylistically, Raphael’s work is varied. Works include subtle, ambient pieces that blend the timbres of folk music and nature akin to musicians such as Adrianne Lenker and Claire Rousay with electronic flourishes akin to Alva Noto and Loraine James. Other works includes the combination traditional sonic and compositional elements of these genre based music in an interactive and non-liner context. This includes video game scoring and installation based work. The common factor between all of these projects is an acute attention to how the listener will perceive and be immersed within the experience the question, whether the attention is directed to a solitary sonic piece or the use of sound in a larger multi-medium experience.
